When all has been said and done,
\nAnd all the words have been spoken and written;
\nWhen the thinkers have themselves become
\na memory,
\nAnd the philosopher is nothing but a figure of
\ncold marble
\nGracing the porchway of the college
\nThat has fallen to ruin;
\nWhen the gurus and priests and prelates have
\nexhausted all their rites
\nAnd their scrolls have decayed and become
\nbut the stuff for birds to build their nests;
\nWhen religion fails, that the font dries up
\nleaving congregations gaping for thirst;
\nWhen even the Dharma itself teeters on the
\nbrink of extinction,
\nAnd darkness threatens to prevail —
\nStill a Lamp shall continue to burn,
\nForcing back the shadows,
\nAnd lending its light to those
\nWho bend a wick to its flame;
\nThe all-embracing light of the Nembutsu,
\nThe inextinguishable Name.
