He lived in northeastern India sometime between the sixth and fourth centuries BCE.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBuddha\u201d is a term meaning \u201cthe enlightened or awakened one.\u201d Most accept that Siddartha Gautama was a real person who once walked this planet, but many hesitate to make claims about what exactly his life was like, aside from the stories passed down through the generations.<\/p>\n<p>His words have had a profound impact on many. These are some of our favorites.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cWe are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves.\u201d<\/b><br \/>\n<b>\u201cWork out your own salvation. No one can and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the sky, there is no distinction of east and west; people create distinctions out of their own minds and then believe them to be true.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThree things cannot be long hidden: the sun, the moon, and the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is easy to see the faults of others, but difficult to see one\u2019s own faults. One shows the faults of others like chaff winnowed in the wind, but one conceals one\u2019s own faults as a cunning gambler conceals his dice.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo keep the body in good health is a duty\u2026 otherwise we shall not be able to keep our mind strong and clear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDo not believe in anything simply because you have heard it. Do not believe in anything simply because it is spoken and rumored by many. Do not believe in anything simply because it is found written in your religious books. Do not believe in anything merely on the authority of your teachers and elders. Do not believe in traditions because they have been handed down for many generations.
